AAFS Presents....

Something different...

One film -  Indoors - Wednesday night - Drinks and light snacks

The film that won the Palme D'Or at Cannes in 2000 caused violent disagreement. Not for the first time its Danish director Lars Von Trier had divided the critics, this time with a musical melodrama - a major departure from the austere parameters of the Dogma style he had pioneered . Von Trier is regarded by some as a miserable crank, by others as a daring genius and 'Dancer in the Dark' provoked the highest praise and foulest abuse in equal measure.

Come and see and judge for yourself!

Dancer in the Dark stars the Icelandic singer (Björk) is a Czech immigrant, a single mother working in a factory in rural America. Her salvation is her passion for music, specifically, the all-singing, all-dancing numbers found in classic Hollywood musicals.  The film makes startling use of the latest digital cinema technology and Bjork's astonishing talents.

Dancer in the Dark (2000)

"The Danish
director has made an
incredibly dour,
music-tinged drama
that might break
some hearts, but just
made me want to
break things." Rod Armstrong,
REEL.COM

"Far from
unwatchable, this
provocative film is still
haunting and irritating me
days later, and that's
probably the best reaction
any artist could hope to
elicit with his works."
-- MaryAnn Johanson, FLICK
FILOSOPHER

"It's a carefully
crafted provocation that
both undermines and
expands the notion of
what makes a movie
musical."
-- Charles Ealy, DALLAS
MORNING NEWS

"Nothing less
than a
groundbreaking --
and magical -- art
house reinvention of a
genre that even
Disney cartoons have
been shying away
from in recent years."
-- Rob Blackwelder,
SPLICEDWIRE

"It smashes
down the walls of
habit that surround
so many movies. It
returns to the
wellsprings. It is a
bold, reckless
gesture."
-- Roger Ebert,
