1) Gabbeh
Starring: Abbas Sayah, Hossein Moharami
Director: Mohsen Makhmalbf
Synopsis: Color-saturated Iranian fantasy/drama about a woman materializing from elderly couple's magical carpet. Critics
hailed its lush visuals, simple-yet-complex narrative. An exotic treat for lovers of magical realism, Fellini-esque flights of fancy.
I love this film, but if you’re into action films this may be not be the one for you.
2) Earth
Starring: Aamir Khan, Nandita Das
Director: Deepa Mehta
Synopsis: Drama/love story set in Lahore in 1947 on the eve of partition between India and Pakistan. I’m not sure how
realistic the context is, but it has its moments.
3) Journey of Hope
Starring: Necmettin Cobanoglu, Nur Surer
Director: Xavier Koller
Synopsis: Vivid, tragic account of a Kurdish family's attempt to immigrate from Turkey to Switzerland. Although it is a bit
depressing it is an excellent film.
4) War of the Buttons
Starring: Liam Cunningham, Gregg Fitzgerald
Director: John Roberts
Synopsis: A light sentimental children's drama about Irish boys from neighboring villages engaged in a long-running feud. No
drive by shootings!
5) Baby Take a Bow
Starring: Shirley Temple, James Dunn,
Director: Harry Lachman
Synopsis: In this lighthearted musical comedy, which was her second star vehicle, Shirley Temple sings, tap dances and displays all the charm and talent that have made her the biggest child star of all time. Shirley's father is an ex-con trying hard to make an honest living by working as a chauffeur. But he runs into trouble when a pearl necklace disappears from his employer's home and the detective on the case decides he's guilty.

1. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
Australia, 1994 (Dir. Stephan Elliot)
One of a string of vulgar and irreverent Australian comedies of the early 90s. They were a welcome change from overblown historical melodramas set in colonial times. It was a huge box office success in Australia and spawned an uncomfortable, but thankfully brief period in Australian life when even macho footballers were appearing on TV in drag. " It's just for a laugh, mate, nothing kinky about me"
2. Beau Travail. France, 1999 (Dir. Claire Denis)
A huge critical success, but left me a wondering what it was all about. Beautifully filmed, foreign legion story line set in Africa.
3. La Haine. France, 1995 (Dir. Mathieu Kassovitz)
Very topical urban gangland drama set in the tower block suburbs of outer Paris. Filmed in raw black & white.
4. The Manchurian Candidate. USA, 1962 (Dir. John
Frankenheimer)
My favourite film of all time. An intelligent, cold war psychological thriller. Angela Lansbury is superb (How sad she ended up as Jessica Fletcher in Murder She Wrote. What a waste!)
5. Strawberry and Chocolate. Cuba, 1993 (Dir. Tomas
Guitierrez Alea)
Cuban cinema launches itself onto the international scene with the unlikely story of the friendship between a gay, anti-Castro, artist and a straight, Party activist. A metaphor perhaps for Cuba's relationship with the rest of the world.

spoof... more camp than Butlins.
3) The Usual Suspects (Bryan Singer, 1995) Gabriel Byrne, Kevin Spacey,
Pete Postlethwaite, Benicio Del Toro. Just what is going on here? Who
(or what) is Kaiser Sose? Is he the devil himself - or does he not exist
at all.
4) Buena Vista Social Club (Wim Wenders 1998) Ry Cooder, Ibrahim Ferrer,
Omara Portuondo, Compay Segundo, Eliades Ochoa. Documentary of Ry
